Things to Learn from Facebook

The internet, including social media, is introducing new perspectives, perceptions and orderings of the world. We function in a world mediated by technology, where the boundaries of the physical and virtual are blurred. The relationships between the structure and functioning of social platforms and art seem to be of particular interest with regard to the shape of modern culture. The internet ceases to be just an artistic medium but also a part of the art world.

This phenomenon is a two-way relationship: on one hand, artists functioning in the culture of the internet change its architecture, and on the other, the internet – including social media – has an influence on the visual language of art, co-creating a new aesthetic.

Art often serves as a ‘litmus test’ for socio-cultural reality or as an ‘early alarm ystem’, anticipating certain changes and diagnosing them much earlier than socio-cultural theory. It very often also communicates or works out new solutions.

The “What you learned on Facebook” exhibition subtly outlines a picture of the interrelated nature of the internet and the art world and of their mutual interactions.

Accompanying events: 06.10.2018 / 1 p.m. – Guided tour with Artists and Curators and art workshops with Szymon Rogiński

What won’t you learn from Facebook?

One of the artists taking part in the exhibition ‘What Can You Learn from Facebook?’, Szymon Rogiński, invites all interested people to join a workshop associated with the theme of the exhibition. The workshop will be an experiment taking place between two worlds: the real and the virtual one. Participants will meet the artist in person and have a chance to know each other a bit better during a round of team building games that will last about two hours. The artist hopes that the process will create a feeling of group identity among participants. After the workshop there will be a group photo, that will be used to form a Facebook group based on this real experience. The last phase of the experiment will consist of an observation of the dynamics of the group and its duration.
