Ryszard Ziemblicki – SELECTED ASPECTS OF FOREST MANAGEMENT IN BIAŁYSTOK’S URBAN SPACE (excerpt):
The urban forestry concept has been recently gaining significance, defined as the art, science and technology of tree and forest resource management in and around urban forest ecosystems, with intent to provide urban communities with psychological, sociological, economic and aesthetic benefits (Miller). Pursuant to the urban forestry concept, the term “forest” is defined much more broadly than in traditional forestry, the definition extending to forests as well as small-scale wood stands, parks, gardens and isolated trees (Konijnendijk).
When discussing green urban areas, so-called pocket forests are noteworthy, small-scale tree clusters planted with the use of a method introduced by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. The method involves high-density (3 trees per square metre) planting of 20 to 40 endemic tree species in small-size areas (ca. 200 m2), all planting evolvement left to forces of nature. Such self-regulation, as it were, gives rise to arboreal micro-habitats, extremely valuable to urban space.
Ryszard Ziemblicki – graduate of the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Life Sciences in Poznań. Completed post-graduate curricula at the Faculty of Forestry of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, and the Faculty of Law at the University of Białystok.
