Dorota Podlaska, a great enthusiast of Asian cinema and Far Eastern culture, for few years she has interpreted films with paintings for Five Flavour Film Festival’s catalogue in Warsaw and for New Horizons Film Festival in Wroclaw as part of an exhibition Midnight Show in 2014.
We invite you to a meeting at the Arsenal Gallery power station in Bialystok where Dorota Podlaska will talk about her methods of work, art journeys through Asia and her sources of inspiration through the presentation of photographs and films. The artist talk will be accompanied by the projection of three short films made by the youngest generation of filmmakers from Hong Kong, the winners of the Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival.
Fresh Wave gathers the best short films made by the youngest generation of Hong Kong filmmakers. The project was implemented in 2005, with Johnnie To and Hong Kong Arts Development Council as its patrons. The proposals chosen from among the entries receive funding and expert supervision, and the completed films take part in a yearly competition – a barometer of what is new and fresh in the cinema, but also of the issues important for the new generation. Set of Fresh Wave films were presented at Five Flavours Film Festival since 2012. Dorota Podlaska choose three of them, which illustrate her interests in action films, martial and culinary art.
THE KILLERS, Hong Kong 2013, 28 min
dir: Alan Lo Wai-lun, script Chan Ho-man, Pang Chi-hoi, cin. Sam Chan Chi-lap
Being a hitman is not the easiest job in the world, so sooner or later a support group where the memebers of this specific profession can unburden had to be created. But what happens if a therapy based on talking is just not enough?

FOOD FASCIST, Hong Kong 2014, 30 min
dir. Yip Man-hay, script Ng Sze-lung, cin. Cheng Kai-ming
The legendary, uncompromising chef, Mo Yik-tin serves food for celebrities in a TV show. Each dish has a special ingredient – often something we would not think of eating. For the final course, the chef prepared something truly unique. How far can a culinary snobism go? Do we really know the price of what we find on our plates? Perverse, beautifully realized satire on celebrity culture, the pursuit of false originality and consumer recklessness.

“Once clothed as an official, you represent law and justice.” This was taught to young detective Xian who worked under Detective “Silent Dog” Ao to catch mountain robbers. To everyone’s dismay, the robbers turned out to be detectives from neighbouring counties who were forced to rob the ruling county to save the poor.
Through trickery and lies, Ao started a bloodbath to kill the robbers. Shaken to the core by Ao’s deceit, the originally naïve Xian abandoned his dreams to uphold righteous values. Not to be outdone, he ended up murdering the treacherous Ao for his own gains. With blades and blood, Xian was later hailed as a legendary detective.
