Arsenał Gallery, ul A. Mickiewicza 2, Białystok

Piotr Wysocki

A Polish visual artist with Ukrainian roots, born in 1976 on the Regained Territories. His early crystalized ideological attitude, which was influenced and formed by liberation and anarchist movements, resulted in social activity. In 2007 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He obtained a diploma with honours at the studio of painting of professor Jaroslaw Modzelewski and at the studio of audiovisual space of Grzegorz Kowalski. He makes documentaries, video installations and paintings. He participated in several dozens of individual and group exhibitions in Poland and abroad. The winner of numerous awards, a scholarship holder of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. He was nominated to Polityka Passport Award and he is a scholarship holder of the Polish Film Institute.

The artistic output of Piotr Wysocki was vividly shaped during his studies. He was hailed an audiovisual humanist and since his first presentations he has attracted the critics’ great interest. However, the artist doesn’t participate in a mass storm on the galleries and art institutions. We are really pleased to invite you to the premiere presentation of his realization titled:

border | cross | passage

The works were realized thanks to the cooperation with the Arsenal Gallery in Bialystok and CCA Kronika in Bytom. The cooperation of these two institutions seem to be essential, they both (distant from the center) constitute a stronghold front of art. Both of them are situated in the borderland, however, they mark significant points on the map of the Polish art institutions. They initiate activities in public space by confronting contemporary art with social and cultural environment of the gallery. This specific environment: the societies both from Silesia and Podlachia, in Poland, constitute the mainstay of traditionalism, cultivating the rituals and strong family relations. It is also worth quoting a famous saying by Marshal Pilsudski: Poland is like a bagel – the outside part is the tastiest.

Few terms from a vocabulary of speeches, militarism, the rhetoric of conflict have appeared here with a reason. The common motif of the three works presented at the exhibition is a deep and oppressive connection that unites an individual with the country, but also with other political, ideological and mental systems. The order of social classes and roles, culture, religion, as well as art may also constitute such systems.
