IZABELLA GUSTOWSKA – The Case of Edward H… The Case of Iza G…

Since 2008 I have been working on a complex project STRINGS OF TIME in which I offer my viewers an experience of the phenomenon of opening up the strings of time. For many years artists and scientists all over the world have been trying to tackle that problem (a good example is the Large Hadron Collider). I am interested in the phenomenon of opening the space-time in an artistic aspect.

Here my space-time opens onto the following:

 

Space No. 1 – The Case of Edward H…

I enter the world of an American artist – Edward Hopper (1882–1967). The frozen situations from the pictures permeate into film quotations; we are surrounded by fragments of different paintings and film realities. We are in an active space of images and sounds.

 

Space No. 2 – The Case of Iza G…

I immerse myself in the space similar to the framework of Edward Hopper’s pictures, but it is my present time and the space of my house and the time of my American trip in 2010 in California and NY. Film images by way of minimal fragments pass on the film quotations from space No. 1 – The Case of Edward H…

The case of time of Edward H… and Iza G… are interrelated. I stop those two strings of time only for a moment.

Izabella Gustowska

 

In her films, Izabella Gustowska used quotations from paintings of the American artist Edward Hopper (1882–1967) as well as quotations from different films. Izabella Gustowska was born in Poznań, Poland. She graduated from the State Higher School of Fine Arts (at present University of Arts) in Poznań in 1972. She is a professor at the University of Arts in Poznań, where she heads the Film and Performative Activity Studio at the Intermedia Department of the Faculty of Multimedia Communication, and she is a graphic arts lecturer at the Higher School of Humanities and Journalism in Poznań. She lives and works in Poznań. She uses a wide range of media in her artwork.
