IVAN BAZAK – From… To.

01.08.2008 – 24.08.2008
Arsenał Gallery, ul A. Mickiewicza 2, Białystok

… even until now Belariussian people are waiting for a decision from the authorities concerning getting a flat. In the kitchen, at the table even now it is possible to hear: “We don’t need any politics in here, we do not know who is eavesdroping us”. At the bus stop, when you want to buy a ticket to get to a village near the country’s border, you should show your poassport. When it turns out that it is not Belarussian one, the lady at the cash window will answer you “You cannot go there!”. After five minutes trying to convince her, she finally gives up and sells you the ticket. You will be supposed to go the the manager of a bus station, to whom you will have to lie that you left your passport at home and finally you will receive a stamp for a ticket you have already bought.

You will have an impression that life between present time and collapse of the Soviet Union has never existed.

If you know what was life like during the Soviet Union, in present Belarus you will feel like in a time machine which let you travel to the past.

Icecream tastes like at one time … Sweet water tastes like at one time…

You will feel like in a vacuum there and understand why Belarussian students sitting in cosy pubs in Prague are drinking beer for Lukashenko…
