In memory of Jarosław Trojan (1958-2023)

Bartek Buczek has been working as an art technician in parallel to his artistic practice for several years. As a freelancer, he installs exhibitions for institutions, festivals and independent galleries throughout Poland, occasionally abroad. Buczek also works with individual artists, building custom cases for works, inventing technical solutions, designing exhibition displays or co-creating individual elements of others’ works.

The exhibition “Change of the Exposition” summarizes Buczek’s experience as an artist-technician, at the same time addressing the specificity of the functioning of technical departments and art handlers, including the technical department of the Arsenał Gallery in Białystok. Their work remains in the shadows, invisible – not only because it is carried out at a time when galleries are closed to visitors. There is no official education path, no available knowledge, and often no standards for the implementation of exhibitions. It has to be hanged, set, run, and all traces of work obliterated.

Buczek’s project at the Arsenał Gallery in Białystok focuses on these aspects that the public is unaware of, turning the exhibition space into a kind of discovery that reveals both the process of organizing exhibitions as well as the choreography, interpersonal relationships, ethos and invention that are associated with the work of a technician. As part of the exhibition, the 1st Symposium of Technicians will be organized, attended by technical employees from various institutions and galleries all over Poland.

Bartek Buczek was born in 1987. He was a scholarship holder of the National Children’s Fund. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice in the field of painting, he defended his diploma in the studio of Andrzej Tobis. Buczek is a painter, creator of video art, installations, and author of texts, including the book Too Expensive, Too Weak, Too Difficult, which is part of the Bunkier Sztuki collection in Krakow. He also works as a gallery employee with wide professional competencies (technician, exhibitor, artist, designer and curator). In his works, including those that go beyond the frames of paintings, one can find a melancholy atmosphere rooted in deeply existential reflection. He presented his works at 10 individual exhibitions and participated in 42 exhibitions, e.g. at CSW Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, Stefan Gierowski Foundation, SACO Contemporary Art Festival (Antofagasta, Chile), SB34-Clovis (Brussels, Belgium). As a technician, he installed exhibitions and collaborated, among others, with Biennale Zielona Góra, Krakow Photomonth, and Esther Shiper Gallery in Berlin. Founder of the Art Industry Standard gallery. He lives in Krakow.
