ANIMATED DOCUMENTARIES

Galeria Arsenał – power station, ul. Elektryczna 13 (the entrance at ul. Świętojańska), admission is free

Animated documentary is a genre already well-established in cinematography. After the success of such films as „Waltz with Bashir” and „Persepolis”, there are dozens of animated representations of the real world produced every year. Each of them has its own way of presenting reality, playing with conventions of classic documentary cinema.

For the second time at ŻUBROFFKA we present a special program, consisting of „animated reality”. Many of the films are socially engaged works, using colour to portray the characters’ dramas. We will show you the most interesting representatives of the genre, films which premiered in Sundance or Locarno. This will be a unique, animated-documentary journey from North America, through Europe to Australia.

PORTRAIT OF JAPANESE ANIMATION

The Japan Media Arts Festival is an event combining various forms of expression available in the space between art and entertainment, such as interactive art, installations, graphics, digital photography, network, games, animation, video, comics, etc. This whole spectrum has been defined as media arts because boundaries between forms and genres are increasingly blurred and it is difficult to tell the difference between art and entertainment. Approximately 2,700 works from more than 40 countries are submitted for the festival selection each year. Thanks to collaboration with other festivals, works from Media Arts can be seen all over the world, including ŻUBROFFKA. This year you will see 9 animations, music videos and other works, showing contemporary Japan from the perspective of Japanese people themselves.
