Around Mazurkas in the Context of the Relationship Between Work, Dance and Rhythm
– lecture and guided tour in English by Matthew Post of Post Brothers
5.08.2023 (Saturday), 12 noon
Arsenal Gallery power station, 13 Elektryczna St. (entrance from Swietojanska St.), Bialystok
admission free
Post Brothers’ tour will consider mazurka, a Polish folk music that spread from the fields of 16th century serfs to high-class European salons, only to return to its folk roots as it circulated globally. As a work rhythm intimately tied to the pace of labor, mazurka is a collective practice that erodes distinctions of work and play, and transforms toil into a source of communal strength and survival. The talk will examine Iza Tarasewicz’s ongoing interest in mazurka, from her use of formal rhythms, cycles, and circles, to her allusions to agricultural labor and collectivity, and will connect these themes to larger global narratives of power, collectivity, class, and work, thereby elaborating the connection between the mechanisation of labor and the rhythms of our cultural practices.
Post Brothers – a critical enterprise that includes Matthew Post, an enthusiast, word processor, educator, and (co)dependent curator living in Kolonia Koplany, and working anywhere and everywhere.
The event accompanies the exhibition „Duby smalone”.
