Old houses in the region are deteriorating abandoned, being dismantled, rebuilt and subjected to various modernizations, because they do not meet the modern needs of their owners and users. Afterall, these were not buildings designed to last for centuries. The state of progressive deterioration of the wooden-shingled roof slopes presented vertically in the form of a monumental installation, observed at the exhibition, is the last stage of their natural life cycle. Like vernacular architecture itself, the processes of transience and change observed here are not difficult to romanticize, although for the users they have a primarily practical dimension. Residents of Podlasie must grapple with the question of how to recognize their own folk heritage without reducing it to a tourist brand or sentimental myth. During a guided tour with curator Katarzyna Różniak-Szabelska, we will consider how to ethically refer to folk art and architecture.
